  44. INSTALLATION AND "BRANDING" INSTRUCTIONS
  45. ----------------------------------------

  47.    This section explains how to install a downloaded copy of
  48.    4NT.
  49.    
  50.    [If you have a copy on diskette or CD, or a copy purchased
  51.    electronically, we assume you have already completed the installation
  52.    -- otherwise this file would not be visible!  If you need to
  53.    reinstall your purchased copy of 4NT, just restart
  54.    the INSTALL program.]
  55.  
  56.    There are just three steps you need to take to install a downloaded
  57.    copy of 4NT:
  58.  
  59.       >> Extract all the files to a new directory (do not use a directory
  60.          you're using for other products, or for a previous version of
  61.          4NT).
  62.  
  63.       >> Start 4NT.  It will "install itself".
  64.  
  65.       >> If you are upgrading a previously purchased copy, "brand"
  66.          4NT with your name and serial number.
  67.  
  68.    Additional details on these steps are below.  For branding and manual
  69.    installation instructions see the sections with those headings below.
  70.  
  71.    You can view any of the documentation files on-line, or copy them to
  72.    your printer.  The Introduction and Installation Guide in 4NT.TXT
  73.    has page breaks, headers and footers; all other documentation files
  74.    are unpaginated ASCII text.

  77. "Self-Installation"
  78.  
  79.    To begin the installation process, simply run the program file,
  80.    4NT.EXE, from a prompt or from your desktop.  This will
  81.    automatically start the self-installation file _4INST.BTM, which will
  82.    finish installing 4NT on your system.
  83.  
  84.    _4INST will prompt you for permission before each installation step,
  85.    and no system files will be modified without asking you first.
  86.    
  87.    When the installation is finished, _4INST renames itself to _4INST.BTX,
  88.    so that it will not be run again.  (If installation terminates
  89.    abnormally, _4INST may not be renamed, and will then run again the
  90.    next time you start the program.)

  93. Manual Installation
  94.  
  95.    For complete manual installation instructions, see the Introduction
  96.    and Installation Guide in the file 4NT.TXT.  The detailed
  97.    instructions for 4NT are in Chapter 7.
  98.    
  99.    If you choose to perform a manual installation you should rename the
  100.    automated installation file, _4INST.BTM (we recommend renaming it to
  101.    _4INST.BTX, which is what the file itself does when it's finished).
  102.    If you don't, it will start automatically the first time you run
  103.    4NT.
  104.  
  105.  
  106. Branding
  107.  
  108.    If you are upgrading from a previously purchased copy you may need to
  109.    run the "branding" program to install your name and serial number
  110.    in 4NT (trial version users can skip this section).
  111.  
  112.    Your previous version's brand program may be the older version named
  113.    BRAND.EXE, or the newer version named BR4NT.EXE.  In either case,
  114.    in order to perform the branding you will need the brand program, and
  115.    the registered name, serial number, and validation code which came
  116.    with your purchased copy of 4NT.
  117.  
  118.    (If you have lost your branding information it is replaceable, but a
  119.    small charge is required as recreating the codes is a multi-step
  120.    process.  To request replacement codes contact JP Software at
  121.    sales@jpsoft.com, or at one of the addresses listed at the start of
  122.    this file.)

  124.    The older BRAND.EXE program modifies the 4NT.EXE file, and can only
  125.    be used while 4NT is not running.  To use it:
  126.  
  127.       (1) Exit from all copies of 4NT.
  128.  
  129.       (2) Start a command prompt session.
  130.  
  131.       (3) Change to the directory where 4NT.EXE is installed, and
  132.       verify that both 4NT.EXE and BRAND.EXE are in that directory.
  133.  
  134.       (4) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  135.       4NT (information from other products won't work!).
  136.  
  137.       (5) Enter the command BRAND and follow the instructions on the
  138.       screen.
  139.    
  140.    The newer BR4NT.EXE program does not have the same restrictions, and
  141.    can be run using this simpler procedure:
  142.  
  143.       (1) Start 4NT.
  144.  
  145.       (2) Change to the directory where 4NT.EXE is installed, and
  146.       verify that both 4NT.EXE and BR4NT.EXE are in that directory.
  147.  
  148.       (3) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  149.       4NT.
  150.  
  151.       (4) Enter the command BR4NT and follow the instructions on the
  152.       screen.
  153.  
  154.    If you attempt to brand your downloaded copy and receive the message
  155.    "brand installation error 4" or "contact JP Software or your dealer
  156.    for an upgrade", then you are not eligible to download and brand a
  157.    trial version of this release -- instead, you must purchase the
  158.    upgrade.  See UPGFORM.TXT for an order form.  Once you have ordered
  159.    an upgrade you can continue to use the trial version until your
  160.    upgrade arrives.

  162.    If you receive any other error, you have probably mistyped your name,
  163.    serial number, or validation code, or are attempting to use the brand
  164.    program or codes from one product with another product, which will
  165.    not work.

  177.    >> Extended Directory Searches allow you to change to a directory
  178.       anywhere on your system by entering only part of its name.  See
  179.       Directory Navigation in the help for complete details.

  181.    >> You can directly execute URLs, and files with Windows
  182.       associations, from the 4NT prompt.

  184.    >> New commands include:
  185.  
  186.           OPTION:  Offers complete configuration adjustment in all
  187.           products, either through interactive dialogs or on the command
  188.           line.

  190.           SWITCH:  Provides for "case" statements in batch files.
  191.  
  192.           TOUCH:  Adjusts file dates and times.
  193.  
  194.           TREE:  Displays the directory tree, with or without file
  195.           names, in a variety of formats.

  197.    >> New file exclusion ranges provide a convenient way to exclude
  198.       files from any internal command -- faster and more flexible than
  199.       using EXCEPT.

  201.    >> The new batch file debugger can execute each line step by step,
  202.       process or trace into additional batch files, and display
  203.       variables, aliases, and expanded commands at each step.

  209. REVISION INFORMATION
  210. --------------------

  212. This revision B fixes the following minor problems in revision A:
  213.  
  214.    >> The /J switch for the DIR command disabled most other extension-
  215.       based features (e.g. sort by extension, colorization).  SELECT had
  216.       the same problem, and additionally did not return names correctly
  217.       when /J was used.
  218.  
  219.    >> Attempting to use a negative loop counter in the DO command, such
  220.       as "DO -1", could cause the current session to terminate abruptly.
  221.  
  222.    >> The trial version self-install batch file failed when DecimalChar
  223.       was not a period ["."].
  224.  
  225.    >> The installation software was not converting HistWinXXXX lines in
  226.       the .INI file to PopupWinXXXX.
  227.  
  228.    >> The "DecimalChar=" and "ThousandsChar=" directives had no effect.
  229.  
  230.    >> The Help file erroneously identified itself as "4NT v. 2.00".

  232.    >> The "/P" (pause) switch in the FTYPE command generated a "File type
